Abelcet (Liposomal Amphotericicn)

Abelcet is a new form of Amphotericin, in which the drug molecules are combined with lipid (fat) molecules. This combinations seems to reduce the toxicity and side effects of Amphotericin. Abelcet is felt to be as effective as Amphotericin with less side effects. Amphotericin is a very powerful antibiotic for treatment of fungal infections. Cancer patients are prone to develop infections. This is due to a weakened immune system due to cancer or its treatment.

Fungal infections happen when the white blood cells count is diminished due to chemotherapy. The lower the white blood cell count and the longer its duration, the higher the chance of developing an infection, specially a fungal one.

Side effects:

Abelcet is given intravenously once a day. Although very effective, it can cause certain side effects:

Abelcet is almost always given as inpatient and in the hospital. Blood tests have to be done every day to monitor the kidneys and electrolytes (Potassium and Magnesium levels.)
